This is a list of certified organic and rBGH-free dairy products and dairies in
the United States. Rural Vermont has verified that nonorganic dairies on this
list have obtained affidavits from supplying farmers attesting that they do not
use rBGH/rBST (a synthetic growth hormone given to cows to increase production).
Because affidavits are legal documents signed before a notary public, they are
the best assurance that nonorganic dairy producers are abiding by their
commitment to remain rBGH-free. This list does not include dairies with less
binding contracts with farmers, such as written pledges, verbal agreements, or
company policies, even if they have labeled their products as "rBST-free."
However, an organic label is the only 100% guarantee that a dairy item is not
produced with milk from cows injected with rBGH. A test to identify milk that
contains rBGH is currently being developed.
All dairy products made from sheep or goat's milk are rBGH-free because rBGH
cannot be used on these animals. rBGH is not approved for use in Canada, the
European Union (France, Italy, Ireland, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium,
Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden,
Finland, Denmark and Greece), New Zealand, and Australia. Therefore, cheeses and
other dairy products from any of these countries are definitely rBGH-free.
We encourage you to support small family farms and their cooperatives in the
U.S., denoted by *, whenever possible. Your supermarket's brand may be rBGH-free.
To find out, inquire at the corporate headquarters or ask the store's dairy
manager.
