This is the beginning of a larger project documenting the work of women in the field of environmental science. The three women profiled here are from different cultural backgrounds: American Indian, American, and British. However, I am actively seeking biographical information on Asian, South American, and African women explorers, naturalists, or scientists. This assignment was completed for a course at Rutgers: Gender and Culture in Children's Picture Books.

We were asked to provide a one to two page sketch of each woman's life and accomplishments, indicating authoritative sources from which that information was synthesized. Then we had to locate as many picture book biographies about each woman as possible and evaluate these biographies in light of informational, literary, cultural and gender criteria.
